New Gate!!!

It's our understanding that the gate has been repaired and will be fully functional very soon. However, there was one alarming remark in the Island Cove website that pertained to the cost of this repair. Under the heading "New Gate Installed" it states "The old motors were slightly damaged....." and  "Part of this cost for these new motors will be covered by the party who destroyed the old gate." PART.....who is going to cover the other PART. I don't know about you but I pay for what I damage, not for what somebody else damages. Anyway, keep checking your mailboxes!!! ......If anyone has photos of the new gate, please post.

Long Time, No Talk!!!

I can't even remember the last time we posted anything of importance , it's been so long. That being said, we hope to get back into the game and get the blog up and running again. If there are any topics you would like discussed please comment and we will do our best to oblige.

Gate crasher caught!!!!

Well I went against my better judgement and logged onto the Island Cove website to update myself on current affairs and to my amazement there was a post regarding the gate. Sounds like there was extensive damage to the gate and several vehicles. I'm hoping the operator of this vehicle was carrying auto insurance, more importantly coverage beyond the $10,000 Florida minimum. According to Florida law if your insurance policy only offers up to $10,000 of coverage and the amount of damage you cause exceeds that, you have to pay the difference out of pocket, his pocket NOT OURS!!!

Sorry....been busy!!!!

Haven't been able to post these past few weeks because of family matters at home......we have been preparing and sending our children off to college.  Now that one is all moved in and studying only the other remains and he's on his way to USF. Enough about that, I understand our front gate took on a new look.  Anybody willing to elaborate it would be greatly appreciated. I would venture to guess, as all things Island Cove go, it won't be repaired until the spring of 2016 and that will probably be done with duct tape and zip ties. I would hope though, with the busy season around the corner, that swift action is taken by our board members and this repair is made soon. Maybe it's a blessing, that gate was falling apart faster then our sea wall.....oops did I say that out loud???

Looks like we have a new neighbor....

Is one of Florida's most infamous tabloid fixtures, Casey Anthony, living on Siesta Key? That's the rumor that one private investigator is currently digging into.....of all places!

For those in need of spiritual guidance....

If you haven't been keeping in touch with Island Cove residents here's something that might come as of a surprise. One of our very own has become a self-proclaimed Reverend. Reverend Gerry, as he prefers to be called, is available for all of your spiritual and emotional needs. Rev. Gerry titles his current sermons "Happy Hour" and encourages new parishioners to attend. If you just need a hug or a shoulder to cry/lean on Rev. Gerry is there for whatever you need. For many of us this comes as a shock, Gerry has been called many things over the years but we never thought Reverend would be one of them.

For all of you Ford's Garage fans....

Ford's Garage gets to continue being Ford's Garage. The burger-and-craft-beers restaurant, which opened its first location in downtown Fort Myers in February 2012, has entered into a brand-licensing agreement with Ford Motor Co. It is the first restaurant to be allowed rights to the iconic blue-oval logo, as well as other of the automotive giant's brand imagery. Thank goodness because Ford's Garage sounds a heckuva lot better then _____ Garage!!!  (You fill in the blank)

Looking for the best tasting tacos of SW Florida.

Food critic Jean Le Boeuf is looking for the restaurant making the best tacos in all of Southwest Florida. The public is nominating their favorites and the highest vote getters earn a spot in the finals. JLB (or the Boofer, as he's called in the biz) will visit will top 10 vote getters and pick a winner on July 23rd. Aside from the drunken binges at 2 a.m. at Taco Bell, what is your favorite taco joint?
To be cont.

900 jobs coming to SW Florida...

Looks like I'll be able to retire sooner then expected with hundreds of jobs coming to Southwest Florida by the end of the summer.  Alta Resources is hiring twice as many part-time employees this year as it did last year. Alta Resources handles customer service and health insurance calls for larger companies. Let's see if I meet the qualifications..... The ideal candidate will be a college student (check) who has a friendly voice (check) is computer savvy (check) and is bi-lingual (el checko). Well, based on that I like my chances.

BREAKING NEWS TO PREVIOUS POST!!!!!!

This just in.....4 hours ago Cleveland won the unanimous backing of a Republican National Committee panel all but guaranteeing the GOP's 2016 presidential pick will accept the parties nomination in perennially hard fought Ohio. Now the "Mistake by the Lake" will be known for more then polluting the Cuyahoga River and it's sports teams...(do they still have sports teams?) "As Ohio goes, so does the presidential race," said party chairman Reince Priebus.......Oh boy!!!!!!

For Our Ohio Residents!

If you've ever googled "Ohio tourist attractions" (and why would you) you should have noticed nothing comes up or it will direct to another state, say like Michigan or Indiana. Well apparently this doesn't seem to bother the Republican National Committee as a panel is recommending Cleveland to host the party's 2016 presidential convention. The full 168-member RNC is expected to ratify the choice next month.

Happy 4th of July!!!!

Hopefully everyone enjoyed a wonderful and happy 4th of July as we remember those who made this day possible......not to brag but this past 4th was one of the best I/we have ever celebrated. If you ever get a chance to go to the "Hollar" (and you won't because you probably won't be invited) there is no better place on this earth to spend the 4th of July. Great people, great food, great music and more importantly iced cold beer!!! If you are looking for a "Hollar" type of time surround yourself with genuine, warm-hearted friends, great home cooked food (minus the nasty fish) and your favorite cocktail...then be prepared to smile, laugh and simply enjoy life the way it was meant to be enjoyed. As we here thank the wonderful and generous hosts of the "Hollar" make sure you do the same and thank those who made your 4th possible.

Took a Little Break....

As happens during most summer months life gets busy and some things seem to take precedence over others and in our case the blog suffered the most. Don't worry we are back and refreshed!!!! We are ready to entertain our two (2) followers with more sarcasm and silliness. So pull up your Jordache jeans and strap yourself in......

Look at our ranking!!

Maybe it has something to do with all cocktails I consume because my time in Florida is usually stress free.     http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5474137?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063

Take a look at this.....

This was emailed to me by a 40 something year old friend who still hasn't moved out of his parents house so based on that it's hard to tell if this is true or him just being jealous!!! I guess if it's on the internet it must be true...http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/05/29/companies-are-rushing-make-money-on-land-they-know-will-be-unusable-few-years/

Remembering the Fallen!!

Wishing you all a Happy Memorial Day and a reminder to please take time to honor the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces and those who have served and continue to serve.

The muffled drum's sad roll has beat The soldier's last tattoo; No more on Life's parade shall meet That brave and fallen few. On Fame's eternal camping-ground 5 Their silent tents are spread, And Glory guards, with solemn round, The bivouac of the dead.

Victoria's Secret Heist!!!

A noon hour theft cost the Victoria's Secret in the Coastland Mall in Naples almost $5000 in merchandise Thursday. The manager found that 60 bras and 140 panties valued at $4,984.00 were taken. Unfortunately the store lacked video footage making it even more difficult to apprehend these offenders. Island Cove residents should be on heightened alert for any scrupulous individuals walking their pets while wearing silk panties and lace push up bras (EVERYONE is a suspect). On a side note, had this same theft occurred in the men's undergarment section the total loss would have been estimated to be $17.48.

Boathouse opens in Cape Coral

A new watering hole is opening up just in time for your holiday weekend. Thursday marked the grand opening of the The Boathouse Tiki Bar and Grill at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The restaurant takes the place of the old KC's Riverstop. The restaurant also offers valet service to alleviate some of the parking concerns. The best solution for that problem is to stumble in and stumble out....no driving involved!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LORI!!

Happy Belated Birthday to one of our own...Lori Hatt turned young on May 19th and is just getting younger and younger!!! We can only assume Jerry, being the Hopeless Romantic, gave you beautiful flowers, wrote you a poem and took you to a wonderful restaurant (where the hockey game was on, of course).

Doggie Dining!

Lee County is looking into a new law that would allow you to bring your dog to restaurants, and eat with your four-legged friend outside. I would venture to guess not everyone thinks this is a good idea.    If approved it doesn't mean you'll start seeing dogs at all of the restaurants. It will be up to each restaurant to decide if it will allow dogs or not. I can honestly say I'm not a big fan of this and for several reasons. First, I'm not even sure if the owner has bathed prior to coming to the restaurant let alone his pet. There has to some sort of transfer of germs involved in this scenario. Secondly, who's to say all of these pets are going to get along......not a big fan of barking dogs at dinner. In addition I am, as are many others, allergic to cat dander...what happens then? I understand service dogs but to bring your pet to a restaurant is going a little above and beyond.

Last Chance To Have Your Lanai Painted!!!

On the Island Cove website there is a post informing owners that this is your last chance to have your lanai painted before the painting company leaves our premises. Hell, I don't remember receiving a first chance. Anyway, a form must be filled out and the request returned to the paint company before they depart. Let's be honest, if you are not a full-time resident you do not stand a chance of being updated on any Island Cove activity.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

We would like to wish all the mothers a very Happy Mothers Day.

Ok, where were we?

Sorry for the lack of posts but we've been busy tending to other needs.....guess there's been news on the Land Use issue, of which you can find a current update on the Island Cove website. Based on what we've read a big "thank you" goes out to all those who came out to the meeting to show support for Island Cove.....and a special "thanks" to Dan for organizing the gathering and more importantly for speaking on our behalf. If you want results you have to participate whether by appearing at the meetings or simply expressing your opinion in a letter. Thanks to all.

Follow Up?

So, what became of the owners only meeting held the other day regarding the upcoming Land Use hearing? What is our next course of action? Has any new news crossed the desk of our management? Why is it so difficult to obtain any information? Why is it WE (and We know who We are) have no problem posting signs and newsletters re: parking, lock boxes, signing in at the pool, door mats, window displays, screen door violators, glass bottles and food in the club house, Dixie Land Band concert, overweight...oversized fat pets and dog booboo pick up...the list goes on and on.....but the items of importance we can't or don't even acknowledge or attempt to notify owners??? Damn!! That was a long sentence...but you get the idea. Our new informational website should be Facebook under "Friends of Island Cove".....I'm done. GO HAWKS!!

Letter Completed!

Since I will not be able to attend any of the hearings regarding the land use proposal, I wrote a letter to express my concerns. I chose to take a different approach and avoid the obvious concerns/complaints......by that I mean I did not discuss ...congestion adjacent to our property resulting from these additional units, which are damages suffered alike by all property owners similarly situated. This would just be a increased traffic condition consistent with all urban living. I did not discuss flooding or other water issues....I did not discuss increased crime, noise or other nuisance issues or visual intrusions on peace and privacy mainly because I would not be able to substantiate those claims. I also did not discuss home value depreciation....basically because I am not a real estate agent. All of these concerns, I feel, would have been or could be shot down with the simplest of rebuttals. Instead I spoke of the environmental value of what those wetlands represent and it's importance to society. The number of birds is increasing, more wildlife now inhabit the area, and the vegetation is recovering. It’s becoming more natural, purer, and more pleasant. Clean air. Clean water. Too many people take these for granted and what most of us don't realize is that without wetlands, we wouldn't have either. I think you understand the path I chose to take.....be creative. Speak to what means the most to you....

URGENT!!!!

I'm assuming many of you have already received a letter from the City of Cape Coral regarding a request for a Future Land Use brought forth by Brandenburg Properties of Florida. If you have not received the aforementioned letter I will attach a copy of it to this post. The land in question is east of the Island Cove Complex or behind buildings 2,4,6,8 and 10.  Brandenburg Properties is requesting a zoning change from single family homes to multi family units thereby allowing them to construct 700 residential units. This proposal can be read in depth at www.capecoral.net/publichearing under LU13-003. Although it's lengthy reading, it would be in your best interest to look it over and make your own opinion as to whether it's a good idea or bad. As previously posted there have been several other proposals over the years to develop the land in question, fortunately none have come to fruition. There is a owners only meeting scheduled for April 30th @ 7p.m. regarding this matter ....unfortunately I will not be able to attend so if any of you are in attendance please post any information. Just FYI I will be writing a letter to express my displeasure (for lack of a better term) regarding this proposal. I will post updates and opinions over the next few days.

"Paradise Preserve"

We can only hope this isn't back on the table...http://www.landadvisors.com/pdf/FLLE30600-99264.pdf

Reason For Concern?

Has anyone received a letter from the City of Cape Coral regarding a public hearing to discuss Future Land use? I'm hoping they're not discussing the area across from our complex but if so this should be of major concern. If anybody has any further information regarding this could you please keep us posted.

Broken Gate??

Please tell us this isn't true.....is the gate broken again??  If so, how long has it been broke and has it been repaired yet? I don't know about the rest of you but I'm about at my wits end with this gate situation already. There has to be a better solution then these bandaid repairs we continue to make especially considering that gate is the main source of security at the front entrance. Rumor has it we've hired a new company to service the main entrance and apparently they've recommended some major changes. Attached is a photo of the proposed NEW gate...
According to the new company our old gate remotes should still work.

What's Been Going On!!

So, has anything exciting happened in the month we've been absent???  I see there was an Annual Meeting held on April 4th and since we were unable to attend we logged on to the Island Cove website to review the minutes. WHAT!!! We have a new President?? Oh, these minutes are from October 4, 2012....maybe there's something in the News Letter section......here it is...no, this is from Sept, 2012....WOW! and to think we thought WE had some catching up to do after only a month. Anyway now that that's off our chest, give us some good news!!!! Any announcements....weddings, graduations, pregnancies...wait, you're all too old for those. How about anniversaries, birthdays...etc. Keep us posted!!!

No news is......well, bad news!!

As we have posted before we are looking for any Island Cove news, or Cape Coral news, or Southwest Florida news, to keep the blog interesting. If you have any news or anything you would like to discuss please post.......

Cape Coral moves on sign ordinance

All signs Monday pointed to Cape Coral City Council members wishing to address community concerns involving the sign ordinance and then putting the issue behind them as soon as possible.
Cape Coral’s long-awaited new sign ordinance will still take effect April 1 — but council has left the door open to make adjustments to language addressing window coverage, feather banners and A-frame signs. The new ordinance, which is not that different from the one in place, is intended to more fairly enforce regulations. One difference, though: it removes sign wavers from the public right-of-way. No word on whether we will have to remove any of the signage surrounding our pool though.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!

We would like to wish Missy and Pete a very HAPPY ANNIVERSARY and the wishes of many more to come......I know Pete is gonna kill me for this but I can't keep it in any longer. Missy, when Pete and I were out getting liquored up he told me "If he had his life to live over again…next time he would find you sooner so that he could love you longer."  Then we hugged and he wouldn't let go.....that's the part of the story I was holding in.

Fire Assessment Bill

The City of Cape Coral has mailed the bills for the City's fire service assessment to 136,000 property owners.  The bills will be payable 30 days from receipt of the bill. If you are wondering what this is: The Fire Services Assessment is part of the city’s approach to obtaining an additional $20 million for capital improvements and infrastructure costs, as well as diversifying its revenue streams to wean off its financial dependency on ad valorem taxes. In other words the city needs the money to repave roads and replace equipment ignored for years after the recession. First estimated to be  $150.00, your bill should read something in the vicinity of  $90.00. If it's much less don't feel left out, I'll send you a portion of mine to make up the difference.

Failed retirement plan.....

Now that I am entering the waning years of my life it's time to start plotting my retirement. So in my desperate search for a retirement plan I discovered this.....Quicken Loans, the nation’s third largest mortgage lender announced it has teamed with Yahoo Sports as the technology provider for the now named ‘Quicken Loans Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge with Yahoo Sports’ contest. There it is, just pick the winning basketball teams in this years NCAA basketball tourney and I'm a billion dollars richer. Unfortunately, my first selection, Ohio State, loses in the first round...to Dayton......I don't even know where Dayton is........so now I'm back to square one. For crushing my retirement plan and more importantly my dreams I will never talk to a Ohio resident again...........unless they're buying of course!!!!!

We are better then this...............right????

The homeowners association at Regent's Park in Naples is telling one of its residents, the pink ribbon she displays as a breast cancer survivor is a violation rules and must come down. Linda Karp was shocked when she received a letter last night telling her to take down the pink ribbon that means so much to her. She said the pink ribbon is a symbol of courage and survival for the battle she won against breast cancer sixteen years ago. The H.O.A. where Linda resides stated they are prepared to take legal action against her if she does not remove the pink ribbon......from INSIDE her condo. This woman fought what she believed was the fight of her life, now she's forced to fight another against these clowns. "I want them to leave me alone. It's a pink ribbon... I'm not removing it," Karp said. What can I say.....G@D Bless You.......or May the Force Be With You (I don't want to offend anyone).

New Island Cove Resident!

We understand we have a new Island Cove resident......Welcome Cora !
That's looking like a 25.1 lb dog though!!!!!

Lanai Painting

I'm glad someone commented on this in the Social Club post because I recall reading it somewhere but haven't seen anything on it since. From what I remember the mailing said they were to begin painting the remaining floors of the buildings and if anyone was interested in having their lanai painted it would cost $80.00....(don't hold me to that price, I'm working off a bad memory). Unfortunately I haven't seen or heard anything since then......I searched the entire website and couldn't find anything. Why do I bother? If anyone has any additional or updated info regarding this please post. As always, don't forget........sign in at the pool!!!!!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

In case we indulge in a little too much green beer we'd like to wish you all a Happy St. Patrick's Day.....and for those of us who have suffered through one of the coldest winters in recent memory....St. Patrick's Day is a promise of spring.

Several Changes

As previously posted, the new pump or fountain has been installed in the pond to replace the tired old one.....in addition, construction has begun on building the "bridges" to cross over from the carport to the sidewalk. We have obtained a photo of one of the completed bridges but nothing on the fountain as of yet....if anybody has seen either one of these completed projects and would care to comment or post a photo it would be nice to know how they turned out.

Social Committee Chairperson Search

Apparently Island Cove is searching for a chairperson to head a Social Club which gathers monthly between the months of Jan and Apr.  According to the website these gatherings mostly consisted of a pot luck dinner and general camaraderie amongst residents and friends. However, "they are now looking for a different current owner to head up this effort.  Getting assistance is really not an issue as there are many residents who are willing to pitch in and help with the setup and tear down of the tables, chairs and decorations.  It is simply time to get some fresh ideas."  Does anybody know where these club events are or were posted.....I checked the List of Calendar Events on the website and there is a "Welcome Party" scheduled for January 29, 2012.  Just so happens I'm gonna be in town that day and might stop by.....come join me.
UPDATE: Effective immediately, there are changes being made to our communications capabilities within the Island Cove complex.  The Board members are in agreement with this process to reduce the clutter, and improve the capabilities for owners communications....two new cork boards will be put up on the entrance walls to the clubhouse.  One will be dedicated for postings regarding items for sale or rent while the other will be strictly for activities communications in both Island Cove and the community in general. I only wish we had a website to post this info!!!

A Blog EXCLUSIVE!!!!

In the unfortunate occurrence that recreational marijuana is approved the blog has obtained an exclusive copy of a potential insurance risk facing I.C......

Saturday, March 8, 2014

Did you spring ahead?

If you didn't turn your clock ahead before you went to bed last night you are now late for church!!

New bill could make recreational use of pot legal...

In the latest twist in a debate about legalizing marijuana in Florida, Sen. Dwight Bullard, D-Miami, filed a proposal Friday that would allow the recreational use of marijuana. The bill (SB 1562) likely has little chance of passing the Republican-dominated Legislature.  But it calls for allowing people who are 21 or older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and also would allow them to cultivate up to six marijuana plants. The proposal also would create a regulatory structure that deals with issues such as the sale and taxation of marijuana. First, let me start by saying I am all for the legalization of marijuana in instances such as the extract being used to help some children who have a form of epilepsy and suffer from severe seizures......or for any medicinal purposes for that matter. Dozens of studies have shown Cannabis is one of the most powerful healing plants on the planet. Those health benefits extend to the treatment of Tourette’s Syndrome, migraines, seizures, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Premenstrual Syndrome (that last one, in it of itself, should be enough to legalize its use). Unfortunately accepting and promoting these powerful health benefits of marijuana would instantly cut huge profits geared towards cancer treatment. There is the other side, the dark side of pot smoking...... No drug is harmless; not alcohol, tobacco nor marijuana. For instance, just ask those involved in a car trauma caused by a person being high or drunk!! As for an addiction, the worst is tobacco, where the number is closer to 30% of smokers, many of whom go on to die because of their addiction. Anyway, I'm rambling but who cares no one reads this blog anyway....smoke em if you got em!!! Most importantly though...DO NOT!! set your joint down when signing in at the pool....wouldn't want you to start the sign-in sheet on fire!!

Dine and Dish

The following review came from several of our residents..........
"......had an amazing dinner tonight at a little joint at 927 Cape Coral Parkway call "Nevermind"! Best burgers on the Cape and the steaks were outstanding! Prices are very reasonable, drinks as well. Wow...this place beats Fords Garage on our books hands down."
The reviewer went on to write......
"went to Firestone in downtown FT Myers last week and ordered a Scallop dinner, for $28.00, I was served 3 quarter sized scallops on a bed of rice...UGH! No salad, no bread included for that price...real bummer!! Another friend ordered salmon....it was not cooked, then when it came back...it was over cooked. Anyway..check out NEVERMIND...well worth a visit and light on the pockets! The owners name is Rick...great guy, lots of fun!"

NEVERMIND is ranked 30th in the Cape Coral area....Give it a try and if you don't like it or have a bad experience I will give you the reviewers name, home address, phone number and banking info.

Sam's Club coming to Cape Coral in 2014.

If all goes according to plan, Cape Coral will have its first Sam’s Club by the end of 2014. Cape Coral’s city council cleared the final hurdle for the retail warehouse club to bring its latest store to the city. The city council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance approving the company’s planned development project. The store will be located on 37 acres at the intersection of Hancock Bridge Parkway and Pine Island Road. In recent months, Starbucks and Culvers announced plans for Cape Coral locations. Also, earlier this year Golden Corral broke ground on its first location at the corner of Pine Island Road and Andalusia Boulevard. In addition, a Super Walmart is also expected to go up on Pine Island Road once the final stretch of that road is expanded to four lanes. WHAT!!! No strip joint!

Home Depot Greeter!

As with any new home or condo purchase a trip to Home Depot is inevitable and that was the case when we purchased our condo in Island Cove. What was different about this shopping experience was the greeter at the entrance to the store.....he was singing "My Girl" specifically the lyric "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day, When it's cold outside I've got the month of May".....and he was singing it me! His name is Ken Williams and in five years with the home improvement giant he’s taken it upon himself to do more than hand customers carts or direct them to the plumbing aisle. “Welcome to the Home Depot, welcome, welcome, welcome,” he belts out as an elderly couple steps inside. I know it sounds corny but it's the simplest and smallest gestures that make life so much more enjoyable. Plus it takes some stones, try singing to someone at your job....I know I'd get the $@&! kicked out of me!

Any Irish Out There?

The 10th Annual Irish Festival will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Bavarian Gardens at the German American Social Club. Hosted by the Cape Coral Irish American Club, the event features live music, dozens of vendors and activities for the children.

Kinda Cool!!!

The parade committee requested that the Chicago Police of SW Florida lead the Naples St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 15th. Brothers and sisters from New York, Boston and Philadelphia will be joining the CPD as well as members from St. Louis to Minnesota to Ohio in addition to several other hard working departments. This is a unique Chicago event and, in addition to our members participating, this can be a great family and friend affair. Although they are not military service men and women it's a fitting honor for those who risk their lives to make this country a safe place to live.

Dine and Dish Review......Lobster Lady!!

Since there have been several posts voting Lobster Lady Seafood Market and Bistro as one of the top restaurants in the Cape Coral area we thought we would review that one first. Located at 1715 Cape Coral Pkwy West Lobster Lady has been ranked #14 of 309 restaurants in the Cape Coral area and is a 2013 Certificate of Excellence recipient.  Full service seafood market (fresh, frozen, dry goods) and 1000 gallons in live lobster tanks with lobsters ranging from 1lb to 20lb.   Full service dinning with a large menu, pleasant staff, and always at least 1 chef in house.  Great eclectic coastal cusine at affordable prices. Besides great food, Lobster Lady also provides live entertainment 7 days a week from 8:30pm to 1130pm.  As with most restaurants during busy season, be prepared to wait during peak hours and it is suggested you call 30-45 minutes before your expected arrival. Your reviews are welcome!!

Hats off to one of our own!!

Excellent investigative work M.C......I'm sure I speak for all of us at Island Cove (except maybe one) when I say "Thank You" for exerting the time and effort in finding those unwilling to abide by the rules and regulations of our community. As you so eloquently put it, "this is our home" and you are correct when you say these types of incidents should be reported. We should all take note of M.C.'s efforts and stand along side him and make sure this does not continue!!

Update.....Lock Box Issue!!

Word on the Island Cove street is the lock box issue has once again reared it's ugly head....now the brain trust would like the owners to place a sticker on their lock box which corresponds to the sticker on their car.  Umm!! How about we have the real estate agents register their lock boxes with the office and have them placed in a designated area, say by the mailboxes or the workers garage or a holder/pole underneath the owners or......There has to be a better solution then the ones proposed by these gentlemen.....

I Pledge Allegiance....

The flag of the United States is one of the nation's most widely recognized symbols. Within the United States, flags are frequently displayed not only on public buildings but on private residences. The flag is a common motif on decals for car windows, and clothing ornaments such as badges and lapel pins. Throughout the world the flag has been used in public discourse to refer to the United States.......but I don't think it's ever been used like this. They are pledging allegiance to his pants!!!!

We Suck!!!!!

USA Hockey apparently had a hangover from the Canada game. In the bronze medal game against Finland, the American team suffered a humiliating 5-0 loss which saw them totally outclassed on both ends of the ice. Bottom line is we flat out sucked....not enough to move to Canada....but sucked!!!

USA vs CANADA.

Get ready!! Team USA plays Team Canada today in the Sochi Olympic men's hockey semifinals. It's the most anticipated event of the Olympics, because it's probably going to be incredible. I think it was a great strategic move letting the Canadian women win the gold in hockey yesterday, sort of gives the Canadian men's team false hope. The Americans have been playing the best hockey at the Olympics up to this point while Canada has looked susceptible at times, including their 2-1 victory over Latvia in the quarterfinals. The moment is now for the U.S..........................................................................................................

On the sixth day, God turned to the angel Gabriel and said, "Today I am going to create a land called Canada. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and eagles, and beautiful sparkly lakes teeming with carp and trout. There shall be forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs overlooking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon."
God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so that the inhabitants prosper, and I shall call these inhabitants Canadians. They shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth."
"But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?"
"Not really," God replied. "Just wait and see the neighbors I am going to give them."

Better Late Than Never..

A 101-year-old-man is running for Florida Congress, proving you are never too old to follow your dreams. John Newman, of Sarasota, is tossing his hat in the race for Floridas 16th Congressional District as a write-in candidate. If he wins, he would be the oldest freshman in Congress. The reason for this post is many of you in Island Cove probably went to school with John.

Dine and Dish

Since there hasn't been much to post about on the news front we thought we'd start a segment where we review restaurants in the Cape Coral/Ft. Myers area. We will post information about a random restaurant and if you've had an opportunity to dine there we'd like your feedback, whether good or bad. Also, if there's a restaurant you are thinking about dining at and would like to know if anyone has been there let us know which one and we will poll our 2 followers.

"Take Me Out to the Ballgame.........."

With the Super Bowl over, it's finally time for baseball and in the Ft. Myers area that means the Boston Red Sox. Pitchers and catchers are reporting today, February 15th, with the full team reporting on Feb 18th. As far as seasons go, the Boston Red Sox 2013 campaign was alright. It's hard to do better than a World Series championship, after all. So here's your chance to go watch the defending World Series Red Sox play ball. Oh!, just FYI I'm not a Red Sox fan but I'm not gonna reveal my team until I see how things start to take shape (you know, a front runner fan)..
...so, who's your team???

Follow Up to The Previous Post "Reviewing Survey........."

Before reading any further please refer to the previous post titled Reviewing the Island Cove Survey From 2011....more importantly read the response in the comment section from an anonymous poster. First, let me begin by saying the original post was a look into the survey and how the owners wishes were addressed by the Board. I wanted to see if the survey was given for a reason or if it was just to appease a group of owners who were demanding change. That being said, several of our concerns were met and others are at least being considered which is a far cry from what was previously discussed. Moving on, I couldn't agree with the poster more that the Island Cove Website is an embarrassment.....especially at $650/year.....try sending a work order form or any other form and you will rec. an error response indicating there is no recipient email address. We realize change is needed in the way the website is maintained, after all it's our only source of information regarding our community. I/we rarely look at the Island Cove website because of the simple fact that it is so far behind.....which in part was the reason for the creation of this website. After the inception of this website the "Entertainment" post popped up on the Island Cove website which made us wonder if that was being done in direct response to what we are trying to accomplish here.....just speculation...(we make note of the same fact in the "No News" post). As for this website ......... unfortunately, response has been minimal which makes it extremely difficult to post photos, upcoming events and general information which makes us wonder if it's even worth it. We are aware we are in our infant stage and it's going to take time to catch on but our mission has and will be to provide current and honest information regarding the Island Cove Community.....with a side of sarcasm of course. Time will tell and hopefully we can rely solely on the information provided on the Island Cove website and end what we are doing here. Anyway, trust me when I say your frustration is being felt by many and you are not alone.....and don't forget,  "Sign in at the pool".

If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.

Budweiser Clydesdales in the Cape

The iconic Budweiser Clydesdales are coming to Southwest Florida. The hitch team and red wagon will appear at multiple community events, including two stops in Cape Coral and the Fort Myers area. On Friday, Feb. 14, from 3-5 p.m., the team will be at the Shops at North Cape, 2481 Del Prado Blvd. The Clydesdales are an enduring symbol of Budweiser's commitment to quality and one of the world's most recognized corporate symbols and are usually the last thing I see before I pass out from too many "Buds".

O Canada!!

To all of our Canadian friends I have to ask, "what is going on up there?" From the frozen tundras of Canada a nonprofit organization has installed Canada's first-ever crack pipe vending machine in Vancouver in an effort to curb the spread of disease. For the measly price of .25 cents this machine will dispense a Pyrex crack pipe. Now a coastie can get a pipe for less then a loonie! The war on drugs just took a strange turn.........

And just at a time when I was beginning to cheer for you at the Olympics!!!

Reviewing the Island Cove Survey from 2011

Some of you might remember the survey we were asked to complete several years ago regarding any changes or recommendations we the owners had for our community. Although its been awhile since the survey, I thought I would look back on some of our suggestions to see how far we have progressed.

  • With regards to security one of our major concerns was people entering from the front to use our facilities. It appears preventative measures have been taken to rectify this problem. Status: Improving.
  • Our concerns with the grounds dealt with the planting of more flowers. Status: On Going
  • Enhancements to the Club House included our requests for an ice machine, vending machine and a PA system. Status: Completed.
  • Enhancements to the complex included (in order of preference)
    1. Gas or charcoal grills located strategically around the complex
    2. Have the pool and spa open beyond dusk
    3. Consider a better means to launching kayaks into the canals.
I realize these things take time and its my understanding  #1 is already in progress, that being said  could you imagine the difference to our facility the completion of  #2 would make. Status: Hoping.

Considering where we were and how far we have come I would like to thank our current Board Members for taking the time to listen to our collective voices and begin to make the necessary improvements.
The survey can be found in the Island Cove website under reports.

Pool Question....

As viewed in the comment sections of the other posts some questions have been raised regarding the pool....today's (Feb 7th) opening time and the amount of guests allowed at the pool. We were able to find the following information:
  • Please keep in mind that you are limited to a total of 6 people at the pool/spa and no more unless previously approved by the property manager and/or the Community Board.
  • The rules for the pool and spa are posted both at the pool and in the clubhouse.  You are required to sign in each day at the clubhouse prior to entering the pool/spa.  By utilizing the pool and/or the spa you acknowledge that you will abide by all of the posted rules. The gate next to the parking lot is to be used for exit and emergency purposes.  Most importantly there is absolutely no glass or food allowed in the pool/spa or gazebo area.  Broken glass is extremely dangerous and any type of food including snacks such as peanuts, M&M's, crackers etc. attracts birds which may in turn begin to discharge excrement on the pool deck and in the pool itself which may result in the temporary closure of the pool area.  Failure to abide by these rules can result in the assessment of a fine, and/or loss of privilege to use the facility.
  • Our request for today's start time was not returned.
Bottom line is.....be on your best behavior at the pool because you never know who's watching!!!!

A New Water Feature

Rumor has it we are getting a new water fountain to replace the one which is currently spewing water a breathtaking 4 inches into the air. The new water fountain is said to change color and provide a larger spray of water. Hopefully romance abounds as lovers stand amazed and kids of all ages yelp with joy while viewing the wondrous artistry of Island Coves newest attraction.

FINALLY!!!!!!

Finally some activity!!! For a while there I was beginning to think I was talking to myself. That being said, now I can get back to posting some senseless, meaningless information. Also, if anyone has any topics of interest that they would like to discuss please feel free and I will do my best to accommodate. Oh!! and don't forget "Sign in at the Pool"

From the police blotter!!!!

A man was arrested after watching porn and masturbating in a McDonald's parking lot in Bonita Springs Thursday. It happened around 7:30 p.m. at the McDonald's on S. Tamiami Trail. When deputies arrived, they found a man sitting in a Mercedes Benz looking at pornographic pictures on a small laptop while masturbating.
Apparently there was no "happy meal"-- or happy ending -- for this senior that day.

No News!

Well, with limited or actually no participation coming out of Island Cove it has become increasingly difficult to post any upcoming events or activities being planned. We have noticed however, the Island Cove website is being updated with more frequency then it has been in the past which is very refreshing. One post in particular under the heading "2014 Entertainment Options" was well thought out and was our intention for this blog at its inception. Either way it's good to see that the concept has caught on and local entertainment options are being discussed and brought to the attention of others.

Restroom in the Olympic Village in Sochi!

"Hey, can you pass the toilet paper please!" Or better yet, "Was that you or me?"......

WHAT!!!!!!!

Cold shelter opens tonight in Fort Myers!!!  With temperatures headed toward the freezing mark tonight The Salvation Army in Fort Myers is opening its doors to men, women and children who do not have safe shelter. The Salvation Army is also seeking donations of a few hundred pairs of new socks, warm hats and jackets. God Bless the Salvation Army and all that they do but it has to be 20 below 0 before they'll even turn the heat on in the Midwest!!!

8 Pilot Whales Found Dead off the Florida Coast

Eight pilot whales have died in shallow waters off Floridas southwest coast, with six others remaining unaccounted for.  The Coast Guard has temporarily closed the area to traffic and ordered boaters to reduce speeds off the shores of Fort Myers. These whales usually make there home at least 20 miles off the Coast of Florida, so when they do swim inland it's often a sign they are suffering from some king of disease.

Super Bowl 2014

Super Bowl XLVIII is set as the Denver Broncos knocked off the Patriots and the Seahawks beat the 49ers on Sunday. I'm expecting a good game, as everyone should be. It's the Best of the NFC vs. the Best of the AFC. The best quarterback against the league's best defense. Now all we need is a place to watch the game!!!!

Area Golf Course Recommendations....

As with previous posts I don't actually expect any responses to this next question but I'm going to ask anyway......during our next visit we are hoping to get out and do some golfing, that being said are there any area golf course suggestions?

Up Coming Visit

Ok, the weather in Cape Coral is considerably better then in the Midwest but with a planned upcoming visit near the end of January I'd like to see it a few degrees warmer. Keeping our fingers crossed!!!!

Some Heart Breaking News!

A big part of my childhood has passed away, Dave Madden, the actor and comedian who played the curmudgeonly band manager on the popular 1970s TV series "The Partridge Family," died Thursday at a hospice in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 82.
The cause was complications of the blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome, said his wife, Sandra.

Madden played Reuben Kincaid, who managed the family band and clashed with the wisecracking pre-teen bassist played by Danny Bonaduce.

The Partridge Family, the last true American Rock and Roll band. Now name one of their songs????

And The Hits Keep Coming!

One of the greatest actors of our generation has passed away, Russell Johnson who played the Professor in "Gilligan's Island" has died.

Johnson, who played Professor Roy Hinkley, died of natural causes at his home in Washington.

Johnson was on the show from 1964 to 1967.   Johnson was not in the original opening of the show.  He and Mary Ann were referred to as "The rest."  But Bob Denver, who played Gilligan, insisted that they be included and that happened later.

The Professor, along with Gilligan who passed away in 2005, finally got off the Island.

Your Favorite Restaurant....

We are looking to update the "Favorite Restaurant" section. Is there a restaurant you love to visit, whether because the food is fantastic, or because it's just a familiar and pleasant place to go with friends and family. What is unique about it? What is the best thing you've eaten there? What are it's most popular dishes?
